The emphasis of the proposed work is to find genes associated with a high risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease and to explore the functional consequences of mutations in those genes in cells, animal models and patients.
As most of the PD related genes identified to date involve mitochondria, there is a major focus on mitochondrial function in PD embedded in this grant.
The PIs involved in this proposal are all members of the CfMR. It is the biggest grant ever awarded for research into Parkinson’s in the UK.
The proposal was headed by Profs John Hardy, Nick Wood and Tony Schapira. Co-investigators from the CfMR include Michael Duchen, Andrey Abramov, J Mark Cooperand Jan Willem Taanman.
